Confessions of a Disorganized Housewife: Week 3, Clearing the Clutter

Yup, this is week three of Simple Mom's Project Simplify  . Well this week she instructed us to work on closets, cabinets, and counter tops. I was going to work on my bedroom closet because it needs it badly.
Don't go too googly eyed at Miss Ma'am and her striped babies. In real life her fur isnt that orange. Miss Ma'am, aka Mama, aka Angie, is the reason my closet did not get cleaned this week. She didn't give birth to the kittens in my closet, she just decided to bring them in the house to the safest place she knew of. Oh joy and wonder. Want a kitten? Want two? In about 5 weeks are so the darlings are adoptable.
Okay, so this is supposed to be about what we actually did. I have a set of shelves one might see in a pantry or garage. It's in my kitchen.

This is the shelving unit known as the catch all. It brings this reaction to mind:

Its over three minutes long so you dont have to watch the whole thing. But if you do, look for King Kong. The woman screaming there is Faye Raye.

Yes folks, I wanted to scream every time I saw that thing. It holds incoming mail, pots and pans and such that I have no other place to store, and in general, junk! This is what it looks like after two separate sessions of purging, cleaning and organizing. Not perfect, but lots better.

Lots better. My kitchen is almost making me happy to be in it now. Things are coming together nicely. I'm not going to kid myself or you and say that I'll be doing nothing other than cleaning a few other corners of my kitchen all weekend while waiting patiently for Monday's arrival to start the next challenge, but I will be maintaining the progress made and working on a few things today.
Have a great weekend, all.

  1. Great job!! I like it that you can see your picture frame now, and the top shelf looks nice with the vases and things. It's so fun to do this project with other people. :)

  3. The before/after picture is truly amazing! What did you do with all the stuff that was there in the first photo?? Good work!

You mentioned on my blog about using the toilet paper rolls for a scrapbook, but I can't picture how you would do that. I'd love your thoughts on it!

    1. Hi Sharon, thanks for stopping by and commenting! I guess I should have mentioned in the post that the medicines and supplements found their way back to one central spot in my pantry, along with the jar of tea. The Tupperware was repurposed and any junk was thrown away.
As for the toilet paper rolls being used for a scrapbook, its an idea I saw on Youtube. You flatten the cardboard rolls, cover with scrapbook paper and decorate how you like them, and punch a hole on one side to connect them Most people used four or 5 at a time. You can make tags to put inside the flattened rolls, and use the entire thing as a mini scrapbook. I know it's hard to imagine something like that looking nice, but there are some really great examples out there. I may have just talked myself into trying it soon. If I do I will post it to the blog.

  4. Oh wow! Nice job! Your shelves remind me of our entire office... Just a catch-all for "stuff"! Just think of how nice our homes will look if we keep them in the "after" condition forever... *fingers crossed*

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! So far the shelves are staying clutter free. In fact I teasingly growled at my husband for leaving a pan and a lid on the wrong shelf yesterday, then I went immediately to fix it! But in honesty, I have two hotspots I'd worked on in the past few weeks of this challenge that are experiencing clutter creep already. Ugh! Today I need to focus on that because I really would love to keep the house in "after" condition. Together we can do this!
